hi mr. Anderson in this podcast going to talk about DNA fingerprinting me sometimes where do this at DNA profiling or your genetic fingerprint and basically said it with this guy Alec Jeffreys basically his lab is working with x looking at DNA what do you think you can tell a lot about a person by their looking at their DNA quote-unquote fingerprints another gets me who they were 2 or who they weren't all me to tell paternity for example and so he was working at the universe of University of Leicester and basically figured out that's all I do have DNA finger is around 1984 and basically for the next three years all DNA fingerprinting on the planet went through this University until eventually it was privatized everywhere and it'll probably eventually be replaced by just DNA sequencing hurting all the letters in DNA but to make it understandable essentially what we have if we have long linear segment of DNA but within that we have these jeans and so 99.9% of our DNA and everyone is going to be exact the Jews are going to be the same but you're getting your going to a different copies or alleles of those jeans that's what makes you you but if we look into this area in the middle used to call this Junkie now it's really important controlling Expressions we find this quite a bit of variability in here which shouldn't surprise us because this engine makes the protein in the protein makes a phenotype and that's really what natural selection is looking for or against but this in the middle can go crazy and so it. 7 example of one that we used in DNA fingerprinting and something called short tandem repeat originally we started with something called vntr variable number tandem repeats and you'll find in DNA sequencing that you have all kinds of. Sprinter before that we had searching fragment length polymorphisms inside there's a bunch of different things that we can look at but works best move to the side of the shorthand repeat they were incredible variability and individuals and so what is it you basically have letters of DNA to repeat over and over and over and over and over and over and over over 50 times that repeat what does that look like well if we have these three individuals will call this mr. blonde and it's is red mr. mustache look at these are going to be the FDR going to be different the repeats are going to be different mr. blonde has more than mr. mustache and last name this is red and so if I make out a little easier to grasp onto if I can a mouse and then remove everything else what we get is variability between all individual everything else is the same how do we see variability in here and we can cut infections out using restriction enzymes and then we can amplify them using plain red chain reaction and then we can removing gel electrophoresis out of that work basically I'll take the DNA and I'll put them in a little while until we're looking down on me and said this is a agarose gel I can put this is red and then your mustache I could put those all in the na basically I would then turn on the voltage so there's going to be a positive charge negative charge of DNA is in negative charge and so can be pulled towards the positive so what's going to happen is those little fragments of DNA are going to migrate so what is that allow me to do it allows me to tell the difference between each of these individuals so this is their fingerprints these two are exactly the same here until when they really do DNA profiling what they do is they generally used 13 different sections like this and then infections are going to be highly variable that's a good way to tell him to when would you ever want to do that forensics is one reason and then also an eternity figuring that who's that so let's talk about the murder there was a murder that was committed somebody was brutally murdered by one of these three suspects though it's the blonde this is red or mr. but they left blood at the scene until what I can do is I can grab samples of DNA from each of our suspects and then I could grab the blood itself and then I can do DNA fingerprinting on the before we separate them you may think yourself which of these look guilty who looks like they're capable of Carter and if we separate them then using that gel what we can see that mature blah guilty another with his blood matches up with the crime scene so hot what I mean by matching that will those single for the short tandem repeats every look vert horizontal you're going to be exactly lined up to look at mr. blonde Sun we find more similarities in we would be clean the other because basically that's DNA profiling DNA fingerprint good more sophisticated than that but again it's kind of on its way out will eventually replace this with DNA sequencing in the US  the FBI creating a database of DNA to the load Dairy and basically what they use are 13 different areas within the chromosome of the genome and then they looking at short Henry peep in there now why do I say that's a little bit scary I think you really want to protect your DNA because as we learn more and more about what can be found in your DNA well predisposition to alzheimer's your breath can any of these things with your insurance company would love to get a hold up so I'm doesn't answer to the idea of the police what is if we have to pay for the DNA the odds of two people having the same DNA fingerprint are astronomical and left her identical that I did and I hope that helped
