Pd. 1 Biology (honors)-SY 19-20 Assignments

Aloha all! I often am asked the age old question from students "When am I ever going to need this in the future? or Why can't we learn something more interesting" Well this week you will be learning about what ever you want on your own!

1. Open both documents below. Project Idea List is just for you to reference, you can use any idea from the list or think of your own (with teacher approval via email). Have fun and get creative!!!

2. The Independent Learning Project template is for you to complete. Once you pick a topic to research or a concept to experiment, you will complete the project by filling out the template. (The red writing is an example/tips, you can delete that and replace it with your own content). YOU DO NOT NEED TO MAKE YOUR OWN COPY, WE GAVE EACH OF YOU YOUR OWN. SO JUST FILL IT OUT AS YOU GO.

3. Add pictures, links, videos and feel free to reach out to Ms. Henriques or Ms. Sweeney with any questions or if you want feedback via khs waverider email. [email protected] or [email protected] We do not have formal hours yet... but will post if we do next week. So for now, email is the best form of communication.

After you complete this, go to the "Genetics" Topic under classwork in Google Classroom and complete any work you haven't done or completed from our genetics unit. Also check out the Blood Typing Game!

This folder will contain those presentation assessments which require the links on the internet so that I can post it in your class Google Classroom.

Be sure to compete the "Note / book" QUIA first!

On your website, under the quarter 3 tab called "Meiosis Models" complete the following:

*32 points - picture of all 4 phases of meiosis with event cards. If you didn't take a picture of your event card then type it out on the website.

*10 points - Reflection on this project - "What is your overall reaction to this project?", "Did this project help you learn the phases of meiosis I?" "Why or why not?" "If you had to complete this project again, what would you do differently?"

*8 points - GLO & HOM reflection.

Complete the document as instructed. If you find a topic that you MUST have, turn the paper version to me so that I can reserve your genetic disease topic. Topics are assigned on a first come first choice basis.

If you already have an account, go ahead and add this (FINALS REVIEW SEM - Class Code: RNCHX738)

To create a brand new account, click the link Create my free account.
Fill out the form that appears. Select "Student" as the account type.
Select a username (can’t use the current one – make a new one.
I suggest make it the same but leave out the "834"). Write it somewhere
Choose a password (I suggest you use the same password as the "834" login ). Write it somewhere

Type your first name, last name and school gmail
Press the Create my account button.
You should now be in the Student Zone.
Type in the class code (RNCHX738) in the text field and press the Add class button.
Now that you're done, begin reviewing for the final exam and earn some extra credit points!

You will need a piece of scratch or binder paper between you and your elbow partner.

For these activities, you must run 2 windows side by side. If you don't know how, ask a neighbor.

Grab the textbook "Essential Biology" textbook from the shelf.Read pages 422-425 and 443-449

In your NOTEBOOK, For each cycle listed below, address the following:
*Water Cycle - evaporation, transpiration, condensation, precipitation, runoff, seepage, accumulation
*Carbon Cycle - Photosynthesis, cellular respiration, fossil fuels, combustion, decomposition
*Nitrogen Cycle - nitrogen fixation, nitrification, assimilation, denitrification, decomposition, ammonification.
*Phosphorus Cycle - weathering, decomposition, assimilation
1) Why is the cycle important?
2) Draw an illustration that shows how the chemical is cycled and any processes involved in its cycling. (be sure the words above shows up in either your explanation or your illustration).
3) Explain in your own words how the chemical is cycled.
4) Explain the Human Impact on each cycle on ecosystems

Electronic Binder... The Biology Website
 
In the past you have probably kept all your completed class work and homework in some type of binder.  With this class, you will create a website that stores all your projects assigned in this class.  Because our class uses technology a lot, we are going to post all important assignments and projects on your website.  Think about your website as a "poster".  Instead of using paper, we will use the wonders of the internet!  Start building your website at any time.  Title each page exactly as I did but DO NOT put the content that I have.  It may change from last year.  The rubric and due date will be posted soon!

LINK #1 - MY SAMPLE - tabs must be titled exactly like mine.
LINK #2 - EASY! Use the NEW Google sites to create your biology website.  Will take you less than 10 minutes! 
LINK #3 and #4 - FANCY! If you like the "fancier" stuff then use either Wix or Weebly. Very cool stuff!

Click on video link below and complete the video notes handout you picked up today.
You may need to enter the following information to view the video:

Choose a group manager. Have the group manager make a copy of both documents.
Replace "copy of Henriques" and replace with pd. # and group manager first and last name. Leave the rest of the title.
Share the document out. EVERYONE work on both documents today.
