Eng 10 (Section 1) Assignments

 

My suggestion is to

  1.  read the article

  2.  pretend you are telling a friend (or me) what it is about.  DO NOT LOOK

  3. write down what you said in step 2

  4. go back, read the article again, and this time, highlight the key points

  5.  transfer the 5 most important key ideas to the graphic organizer (paraphrase them!)

  6.  add to your summary - add quotes if you want, but mostly paraphrase

  7.  rewrite your summary, making sure that it contains all elements of the assignment.

AR book quizzes must be taken by the day of our final exam.  Make sure that you are on target!

Character Journal assignment

Quiz on the 13th for lines 1-8 of your recitation!

Your Act III journal was due today... email it if you did not hand it in.

Work on memorization of your chosen monologue/soliloquy.  Draw pictures for each line of text -- this "map" will help you associate pictures with the story behind your speech.

Choose a monologue or soliloquy for your memorization/recitation final exam.  Some possibilities are attached to my home page.  If you come across another you would prefer, please run it by me before you commit work to it.

 

Come in with a decision as to which you are to perform, and be familiar with the language and the meaning of your piece.

1st Character Journal - ACT I  rough draft/1st draft due

What's In a Name?  essay:  Your 2nd draft (revision of your rough draft!!!) is due in PRINT on Tuesday, 4/1.  You need this in order to have a successful peer edit during class time.

This is a 1 point TEST grade (out of 7 points for the quarter), and can help you or hurt you, depending on whether you complete it or not.

The turning in of your final research paper on TurnItIn.com is imperative.  I am not accepting paper drafts and will be grading online.  No submission = no paper.

 

Students who have submitted their papers on time will have the opportunity to revise and have their grade altered up until March 14.

2nd claim paragraph (or counterclaim paragraph) due with at least 2 correctly cited quotes OR paraphrased pieces of evidence.

MLA work cited from EASYBIB or CitationMachine

Bring in 1 good source that supports your thesis statement

 

In class, on 1/14-15, we worked on the article assigned on the home page of empower3000, "Mapping the Past."  Each student completed the polls, read the article, and worked on the extension activities.  

 

In addition to working on this article, all students were assigned a second article of their own choosing (most chose one in the program's email system).

 

The final part of today's assignment was, for a quiz grade, to complete the Thought Question answer for ONE of the articles they worked on.  A 5 paragraph essay is NOT required, but the student should make sure that all parts of the question are answered completely, with details and evidence from the article as well as from their own knowledge.

 

The answer must include at least 1 correctly cited QUOTE and 1 correctly cited PARAPHRASE

         In the article, "______," published by ______, the author states...

 

Complete this survey and have it emailed to your own email address.  When you get the email, forward it to me...I PROMISE that I will not read it, but will simply skim to see that you have taken this survey seriously.  I have done it myself, and it raises awareness of how we can take control of our own stress.
