Assignment

This assignment is a MAKE UP assignment for the Point of View article project that was due 11/15 that many of my magnificent students somehow managed to miss.

Find 3 articles of substance that you are interested in.
Print them out.
Write 3 summaries with a personal response for each article.
Make sure that your summary includes the author, title and publication where the article can be found.
Make sure that there are 3-5 Key points in your summary.
Make sure that your summary includes the WHO/WHAT/WHEN/WHERE/WHY/HOW if they apply.

This organizer will help you with your summaries.

My suggestion is to
  1.  read the article
  2.  pretend you are telling a friend (or me) what it is about.  DO NOT LOOK
  3. write down what you said in step 2
  4. go back, read the article again, and this time, highlight the key points
  5.  transfer the 5 most important key ideas to the graphic organizer (paraphrase them!)
  6.  add to your summary - add quotes if you want, but mostly paraphrase
  7.  rewrite your summary, making sure that it contains all elements of the assignment.

Today we typed up our Rhetorical Precis for both the Tenuth article and Truman's Diary.  All students were told to use GoogleDrive and to "share" the document with me in the gmail account - [email protected]

It is best if the students change the permissions in the document to "can comment" so that we can have a dialog regarding their precis.

Assignment

The dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima was a whopper of an event affecting literally millions of people all over the world. Every day on the news we hear of robberies, murders, accidents, diseases, wars and other tragedies. Most of the time the news tells about things that happened to someone else -- not to us -- and we are at least somewhat insulated from the reality of the situations. Most of the time we listen to the news and think, "That's terrible" or "Gee, what a shame. I really feel sorry for those people." And the next night we're bombarded with a whole new set of characters in a whole new set of tragedies. It is rare that we get any follow up on any of the people who are involved.

Once and a while, we should stop to remember that for each news item reported, a certain number of people's lives change forever. We should not lose our feelings of sympathy or empathy for the many people involved; we should not allow ourselves to become too dulled and emotionally numb from the barrage of tragedies that we hear about each day. We must try to remain alert and empathetic and to try to find ways to not only help those who are hurt but also to reduce the number of senseless tragedies that happen in our world.

Your assignment is to find a newspaper account of a tragic event, read it, and fill out the Point of View Worksheet. After you have had time to complete this assignment, we will discuss your worksheets.

THIS IS WORTH A TEST/PROJECT grade and is DUE on 11/15.

Accelerated Reader - independent reading

Each student is responsible for reading one or more AR books by the end of the quarter. When the student has completed their reading, they are responsible for taking the AR book assessment in the library and submitting the assessment report to me as an electronic pdf or by printing a paper copy.

10 points =100% test grade
9 points = 90% test grade
8 points = 80% test grade, and so forth

If a student chooses a non-AR book there are 2 options for assessment, and the student needs to see me as soon as possible.

Some students have a modified point schedule (6 points required). Students should check with me if they do not remember if they are on this schedule.
