Student Body Candidates

Student Body President

Abran, Shae'Lynn

Do you have any previous leadership experience? If so, please explain. If not, please explain why.
I have never had any formal leadership roles but I like to think that I am reliable enough to take leadership roles as needed. I have never had a leadership role because all available leadership roles go to older participants before my age/class/grade, however I have been a part of a leadership class where we did community service around our campus and organized fundraisers for various reasons.

What function does Kealakehe ASB serve on our campus?
The ASB serves bring our entire student body together as one to make the most of our school year(s). It's not just a group of students you choose to represent your class, it's a group of students who should work to make everyone involved and make high school the best possible experience for all.

Why do you want to be in ASB? What skills, talents, or qualifications do you have that would contribute to ASB?
ASB gives me the chance to put myself out there, to share my ideas, and to use my voice for those who are not so willing on our campus. I speak with a lot of students who have so many good ideas to bring together our student body and just have fun throughout the school year but they're never heard because they feel no one will listen if they speak up. I feel qualified to run this year because I have observed and been able to learn what it takes to get everyone involved in school activities.

Share a challenge that you have faced (big or small). How did you handle the challenge? How did you grow from it?
I have faced the challenge of balancing school work. It's a basic problem but once I started high school I started taking honors and AP courses and the workload was a shock, considering middle school does not prepare you for that. Through freshmen and sophomore year I had to figure out ways to manage my time between school, a social life, and athletics. It took some work and help from family and friends but we eventually figured it out. I grew from this struggle because I was able to learn a little bit more about myself, I now know what methods work for me, what times I study and learn best, and relaxation strategies so I do not become overstressed. Having figured all this out is why I feel ready to run this year

Do you have any previous leadership experience? If so, please explain. If not, please explain why.
Yes right now I am the student body vice president.

What function does Kealakehe ASB serve on our campus?
Personally I believe the most important function Kealakehe ASB serves is to energize the school community, and create a fun learning environment.

Why do you want to be in ASB? What skills, talents, or qualifications do you have that would contribute to ASB?
I really liked it this year, and can not wait for next year when we can get to do a whole lot of stuff.

Share a challenge that you have faced (big or small). How did you handle the challenge? How did you grow from it?
The biggest challenge I have faced is helping someone I disliked. It is hard to find room to give a helping hand to people you dont necessarily like. But it is vitally important to keep helping others and caring for one another in tough times.
Cruz, Williene

Do you have any previous leadership experience? If so, please explain. If not, please explain why.
Yes, I was freshmen class president.

What function does Kealakehe ASB serve on our campus?
ASB serves as a way for students to have input on school activities and their learning environment.

Why do you want to be in ASB? What skills, talents, or qualifications do you have that would contribute to ASB?
I want to be in ASB because I think that the quality of our learning environment is just as important as going to school, doing the work and passing. I would like to contribute to maintaining a social-central and positive atmosphere. I think that I contribute good ideas, have good communication skills and am a people person.

Share a challenge that you have faced (big or small). How did you handle the challenge? How did you grow from it?
One time I stubbed my toe really bad and started bleeding on my carpet. Instead of just standing there and crying, making a bigger mess, I kept my composure and put on a band aid. This taught me how to collect myself and not get too flustered. If I just stood there and bled out on my carpet, I would have had a bigger mess to clean up.
Daquioag, Damien

Do you have any previous leadership experience? If so, please explain. If not, please explain why.
No I do not because I was never the type to run for these types of school things.

What function does Kealakehe ASB serve on our campus?
Manage school events and puts in suggestions and their own opinions on school matters

Why do you want to be in ASB? What skills, talents, or qualifications do you have that would contribute to ASB?
I have no expectance but I make up for it in my charisma and how well known I am around school would help figure out what the people of the school actually want.

Share a challenge that you have faced (big or small). How did you handle the challenge? How did you grow from it?
I used 1.7 gpa in middle school cause i was never the motivated type to excel in school but I do feel more motivated now after my freshman year which shoes my progress in academics .

National High School Model United Nations Research and Preparation Award of Excellence Recipient (2022) IMUNA Award of Excellence Recipient (2022) Relaunched the Kealakehe Ambassador Program (2022) Treasurer for my freshmen year (2020-2021). President of the GSAA (2021-2022) President of the Model United Nations clubs (2021-2022) Officer of the photography club as well! (2021-2022) Treasurer at Waikoloa Middle School for two years (2017-2019.) Received MVS (Most Valuable Student) (2019-2020) I have always enjoyed being communicative with my peers and collaborating. It you vote me, I promise that I’ll hear everyone’s voice and make our school awesome!

What function does Kealakehe ASB serve on our campus?
ASB's main priority is to help plan events that make students want to come to school. Recently I realized that ASB's most important task is to reach out to students and to support any student that may need it. ASB is also the students voice. As an ASB officer, I would make sure to hear everyone's voice and to make sure that their voice are heard!

Why do you want to be in ASB? What skills, talents, or qualifications do you have that would contribute to ASB?
I have lots of leadership experience and I love to advocate for people that might be less open about being expressive. I think that having a person to say something for you can be helpful, not always necessary but supportive. If I was elected as Student Body President, I would make sure to represent my peers to not just admin but also the entire island. I want to start a program that supports students and doesn't specifically make the ASB officers have full power. This goal of this program is to make this school not just place that students HAVE to go to but also a place that students WANT to go to.

Share a challenge that you have faced (big or small). How did you handle the challenge? How did you grow from it?
There was one time when I needed to fill in for a musical. One of the actors in the show had an accident and wasn’t able to perform. So in a matter of two days, I was ready to fill in for the part and in the end, the actor that got hurt still got to do one show! I grew from this experience by learning how to jump into situations that I may not be super comfortable in to help and benefit others.

Do you have any previous leadership experience? If so, please explain. If not, please explain why.
In 7th grade I was elected as Student Body vice president on are student council at Kealakehe Intermediate School. The student council was responsible for putting on dance and other activities and I really enjoyed getting to be the person making the fun happen. I know there will be a lot of work ahead of me if I win but I'm ready for it.

What function does Kealakehe ASB serve on our campus?
Honestly when push comes to shove we're totally here to learn but we're also here to have fun. I believe Kealakehe ASB main role is ensuring that every student enjoys and makes it through high school happy, whatever way possible through parties and dances as well as other fun activities, whatever we can do to keep school spirit alive.

Why do you want to be in ASB? What skills, talents, or qualifications do you have that would contribute to ASB?
I want to be Student Body Vice President because honestly I think that I'm at the point in my academic career where I can push myself to be better, and not just myself but bringing the rest of the school up with me. I am very good at understanding the wants and needs of others as well as communicating to large amounts of people.

Share a challenge that you have faced (big or small). How did you handle the challenge? How did you grow from it?
A somewhat large challenge I faced was when one person wanted one thing and another person wanted one thing I had to pick which thing. Instead I decided to come up with a compromise in order to make both people happy. I think growing from this challenging for me it was mainly my ability to make everyone feel involved and making everyone happy.

Do you have any previous leadership experience? If so, please explain. If not, please explain why.
I don't have any leadership experience. Becuase I felt like it wasn't an important factor in my life. However, as I was growing up, I learned that standing out in the crowd is an important thing to do. It makes yourself unique.

What function does Kealakehe ASB serve on our campus?
ASB serves as an group to put things together. Senior ball, school games, or any other school activities cannot be accomplished without the school ASB. Although ASB seems like they aren't doing much, I know that they are working hard on the back, striving to make the school events more fun and better.

Why do you want to be in ASB? What skills, talents, or qualifications do you have that would contribute to ASB?
I want to be in ASB becuase first, I want to experience leadership. I was always an background person that worked hard for others(like teachers or in group projects), but I felt like there need to be an change in my life. I want to stand out, and be someone meaningful that represents something, like our prideful Kealakehe School. Also, I am an very organized and responsible person. You can tell by my classes. I took rigorous classes. I did physics and chemistry at the same time freshmen year, and took 3 APs in cluding AP chem during sophomore year, which pandemic was very active. I still managed to get all A's in sophomore year, and I think that proves that I am an organized and responsible person. Lastly, this is an TMI but I've turned in definitely less than 7 late works during highschool.

First coming to Hawaii, I was an very bad english speaker. I wasn't able to communicate effectively with others, and beucase of my Japanese introverted personality, I was shy, quiet, and was an background person. This was how it was in Japan. Doing this was considered "humble," and everyone was an background person. However, coming to Hawaii, I realized that US is very different. We need to stand out. It's an dum thing to stay in the back and just oberseve that is going on, and not expressing yourself. This wasn't considered "humble," it was "being dum and losing all your valuable opportunities." So, I started to act. I started by saying hi to my friends, and I realized that I was the one closing myself up. School was much accepting than I thought, and I just had an stereotype that they won't accept me. By this, I learned that I wasn't that of an introverted person. I can stand out, I can be an leader, most of all I am who I am. After I this, I started having interest in standing out in the crowds, and now I want to try an leadership in the school, allowing myself with an opportunity that is only available in highschool as an senior next year.

Do you have any previous leadership experience? If so, please explain. If not, please explain why.
I've had large leadership roles throughout sports and past school moments, due to being naturally gifted with people and able to take control and contribute to have a greater impact on everyone surrounding me.

ASB serves the function of contribution fun and beneficial opportunists to our school community. With giving students fun activities, programs like Ho'ohana reward students for their success which boost morale and overall drive in the classroom setting.

Why do you want to be in ASB? What skills, talents, or qualifications do you have that would contribute to ASB?
I would like to be in ASB to contribute into making KHS a more fun, and continue rewarding students for their success, even beyond the class (interesting more recognition in other programs). Skills or talent I would be able ton contribute being apart of ASB is being able to take on responsibilities, born leader, and not afraid to sacrifice in order to benefit everyone else.

Share a challenge that you have faced (big or small). How did you handle the challenge? How did you grow from it?
As of right now, our team is struggling to keep energy and momentum going into our high level racing season. I'm handling this situation by pushing and motivating people with constructive criticism and adjusting my frustrations with the team to make them preform better. I will grow from this by being able to handle hard social situations and being able to lead through them correctly despite boiling over.

During this pandemic and everything we're going through our mental health is what really matters the most right now. Many of our students are still getting used to High School and my strong-willed personality can help us. My productivity contributes towards ASB because I'm able get things done and make executive decisions that will benefit everyone. Many of my peers are able to come to me which makes me more than happy to help them.

Share a challenge that you have faced (big or small). How did you handle the challenge? How did you grow from it?
A challenged that I faced was during a dress rehearsal for a ballet recital. Everyone was supposed to bring their costumes and com prepared. When I arrived, I completely forgot about it and was really embarrassed when I was the only one who forgot. I handle it pretty well during the dances and acted as if I were wearing my costume. I grew from it by always being prepared and take responsibility for my mistakes or actions.

Share a challenge that you have faced (big or small). How did you handle the challenge? How did you grow from it?
One challenge that I've faced and grown up from is the challenge of growing up the oldest sibling in my household. I count this as a challenge because I've always been told as the person who my nieces, nephews and sister looked up to. I think I handled this challenge by being myself in ways that showed them they could be themselves and by taking on the responsibilities of looking after them.

Do you have any previous leadership experience? If so, please explain. If not, please explain why.
Yes, during my Freshman year I was class Secretary. All though we were online last year, I was able to help plan covid-friendly activities for our school and help Mr. Young with the Ho'ohana Program for our students this year. As a part of his leadership class, I was able to assist students with any questions they had about ASB or any activities we held at school such as Spirit Week or Dress-Up Day.

What function does Kealakehe ASB serve on our campus?
Kealakehe ASB serves as a role-model for other students. They help share students' ideas, interests, and concerns with teachers and school principals. They often also help raise funds for school wide activities, including social events. ASB also gives students an opportunity to develop leadership.

Why do you want to be in ASB? What skills, talents, or qualifications do you have that would contribute to ASB?
I would like to be in ASB because I want to represent our school and represent our Student Council. I feel that I have the organization and coordination ASB should have in a student. Communication is also a key component I have. As a student who wants to be apart of ASB, I'm comfortable with talking to students about any questions or concerns they have about our school, Mr. Young's classes or emails he gives out.

A challenge I have faced was being independent and having to depend on myself for certain situations where I couldn't ask anyone for help but myself because I knew I was the only one who could give the answers to my problems. It was hard at first because I didn't have faith or trust in myself that I could do it but over time I started to realize that sometimes you can't always depend on people to help you. In the end, it's you and only you that can help yourself. And that you gotta trust yourself in situations whether it's hard to face or not. I knew that sometimes relying on yourself is a better choice than having to rely on other people's answers knowing that they could be wrong.

Do you have any previous leadership experience? If so, please explain. If not, please explain why.
Yes I do have prior leadership experience. I served as the Key Club Vice President in the 2020/2021 school year which I then was promoted to Key Club president for the 2021/2022 school year. I plan to rerun for Key Club president for this upcoming school year. I also started a book club at our school in the 2021/2022 school year which I will continue to run until graduation in 2023. I also held a student council seat in the 2021/2022 school year as the class of 2023 Secretary.

What function does Kealakehe ASB serve on our campus?
ASB(Associated Student Body) is a phenomenal program that allows students to speak up for the overall student body as a voice to make changes to our school in order to benefit everyone. I want to make our school a better place through ASB

I feel that I also have my heart in ASB. This past year I got to have an inside look at what ASB is. I love ASB and I want to continue what I do best.

Share a challenge that you have faced (big or small). How did you handle the challenge? How did you grow from it?
The beginning of my freshman year I was not in the uh... stablest household. Because of my life at home I didn't want to socialize. I was afraid of putting myself out there. I just shoved my face in a book and thought time would pass which would make things better. But that isn't how things work. I decided I needed to overcome this. So I put myself out there. I joined Key Club, participated more in my acting class which allowed me to be weird with people my age. Kealakehe allowed me to grow and have people by my side when I needed it most, without them even knowing. I'm thankful for everyone who helped me. And even those who are no longer in my life I am happy for the weird and crazy moments we had. But I want to dothe same for someone else. I want to be able to use ASB as a way for people to reach out. I want to be able to say "hey, do you need someone to talk to? I gotchu". I want to make ASB a more open place where everyone feels comfortable to approach any member with any concerns for feelings they have.

Do you have any previous leadership experience? If so, please explain. If not, please explain why.
A previous leadership experience I've had is coordinating a special event. There was a plan to follow, but time was limited and it was hard having new opinions and ideas overlap with each other. Though there were ups and downs, disagreements, and frustrations... I made an effort to hear out both sides, people's ideas/opinions, and organize the plan in a way we could all agree on. It resulted in a successful event that included the plan from the beginning and new ideas, which satisfied both the audience and the team as a whole.

What function does Kealakehe ASB serve on our campus?
Kealakehe ASB is a council on campus that helps listen to opinions, thoughts, and ideas from our peers, as well as share the ideas with our school staff. I believe that we are representatives of this school, by showing who we are and what we do for this school. Kealakehe ASB also arranges events to express school spirit such as spirit week and Ho'ohana (a student recognition program) to show what our students are capable to do and participate in.

Why do you want to be in ASB? What skills, talents, or qualifications do you have that would contribute to ASB?
If I am chosen to be your student body secretary, I can't promise you that I will be the perfect secretary you can imagine, but I am willing to show my hard work to earn your trust. I will make sure to note down all your best interests in mind! So I welcome all of your ideas that can improve our school and change that "idea" into reality!

A challenge that I have faced is in my AP LANG class. The first quarter was an experience that I never thought would occur in my school life and stressed out about it. I remember not scoring so well in my first essay that was given, which made me think back on why it resulted in that. After writing several essays in that class, now I can see the improvement in my writing. Despite everything, I was concerned about... Being able to ask my teacher about how to improve my essay skills, made me grow and learn how to handle the challenge.

One of the biggest challenges I faced this year was my AP Language and composition class. At the start of the year I had no idea what I was doing and why I was placed into this class. The class was super fast paced and I had to use a lot of prior knowledge to gain a A in the class.

Do you have any previous leadership experience? If so, please explain. If not, please explain why.
Yes, I have taken on many leadership roles throughout my life, such as being the steersman or "team captain" of my paddling crew for over 7 years. This has taught me how to work well with my crew and how leading doesn't mean telling them what to do but by leading by example on how we should be.

What function does Kealakehe ASB serve on our campus?
ASB allows students to have input and to make changes on our campus that we otherwise wouldn't have, pushing us to make leadership decisions and plans for our peers.

I want to be in ASB so I can participate in decisions being made on our campus and to form better connections with other students in our school. Some of my skills include being able to work well with others, being resourceful and independent, as well as being a good communicator.

My dad was paralyzed when I was ten years old, my parents divorced shortly after the accident resulting in me becoming a primary caregiver at eleven. While this was definitely challenging and has affected my life negatively in many ways it has caused me to grow and develop a better work ethic, and understanding of others around me. It has given me more of a drive to accomplish what I want because I know too deeply how quickly it can be taken away.

Blaber, Ciara

Do you have any previous leadership experience? If so, please explain. If not, please explain why.
I have accumulated leadership experience in multiple club positions in and out of school. Before I started my high school career, I was a member of a 4H community service and leadership group named “Fire Nation”. My leadership positions in 4H were club secretary and historian. My jobs in these positions were to take note of meetings and take pictures of our activities. This school year, I hold leadership positions in two of our school’s community service clubs. I am the Interact Club secretary and the Key Club treasurer. I am also our school's current Hawaii State Student Council representative. In this position, I meet with other HSSC representatives from around the state to discuss statewide student concerns.

What function does Kealakehe ASB serve on our campus?
ASB serves the purpose of being a medium between students and administration. ASB should express the concerns, ideas, and voice of our student body to our school's admin, so good change and improvement can be made. ASB is also responsible for planning fun activities for our student body. Planning and setting up dances, spirit week, assemblies, and hopefully a lot of other fun future activities is managed by ASB.

Why do you want to be in ASB? What skills, talents, or qualifications do you have that would contribute to ASB?
I want to be a part of our school’s ASB this coming year because I want to make sure the concerns and ideas of students are heard. Also, assuming our community will be under fewer Covid-19 restrictions next year, I want to help plan activities that will elevate school spirit because ASB wasn’t able to carry out all the exciting activities that were planned for this year. Like I mentioned earlier, I have a good amount of leadership experience, which I believe has prepared me for a role like HSSC representative. Another reason I think I am qualified to represent our school as HSSC representative is because I have grown up in the Kealakehe community. Since I have gone to Kealakehe since elementary, I feel like I can quite accurately represent the ideas and concerns of the population of our school. I have also built relationships with students from our feeder middle schools like Innovations, Waikoloa Middle, and WHEA, which have helped me develop an understanding of their ideas and concerns. Of course, I am always looking to grow and have respect for all students on our campus. I am open to any and all thoughts students have of ways to refine our complex and state school system.

A challenge I faced this year was my sister’s move to college. Being older, she was a big role model to me when it came to classes, extracurricular activities, and other matters. She is still a voice of reason when I am in need of it, but I do not see her everyday like I used to. Her absence has made me more independent and ambitious. Although I miss her a lot, I am so proud of how well she has settled into college and grateful for the growth I have made in light of this change

A challenge that I faced was when I was an elementary I had to speak in front of 300 adults for my leadership class. I was really scared/nervous. How I handled this problem is that in my head I just kept telling my self that I was doing this for the community. How I grew from this is now I'm not as scared in front of big crowds.
