Assignment
Purpose: 2005 was designated as the year of physics. We are deeply indebted to generations of physicists for the world we understand, our security, our livelihoods and our economic prowess. The fruits resulting from the sacrifices of these intellectual giants are ubiquitous, yet too often taken for granted. Many of our leaders no longer seem to respect or abide by the opinions of scientists, and yet they depend on the technology developed by scientists. They frequently make decisions without understanding nature, the technology we all use, and the planet-wide consequences of abusing technology. This project seeks to foster a greater understanding of what physics has done for us by studying a leader in the field.
Facts: According to the American Institute for Physics, nearly 36% of all high school students take physics each year. More and more students are beginning to enroll in physics programs across the country. Starting salary for someone with a degree in physics ranges between $40,000 and $60,000.
Goal: Students will create a poster, t-shirt, or pamphlet about a particular physicist. The project should include:
· picture (could draw if doing t-shirt)
· short biography
· impact in science
· how his/her legacy applies to student’s life in Hawaii
Choices: Below is a list of 14 different people that have made a huge impact on the field of science. You may find your own on and here is a helpful website: http://phys.kent.edu/~manley/physicists.html
·
Galileo Galilei
· Blaise Pascal
· Sir Isaac Newton
· Benjamin Franklin
· Charles Augustin de Coulomb
· Georg Ohm
· James Prescott Joule
· Lord Kelvin
· Wilhelm Rontgen
· Albert A. Michelson
· Max Planck
· Marie Curie
· Albert Einstein
· Niels Bohr
Details:
- Students must first select one individual to study.
- Students must then do research to find out more information about the particular physicist.
- Students must cite their sources. Plagiarism will NOT be permitted.
- Have fun!
