EXCUSED ABSENCES
In the case of an absence, student(s) must bring a note from a parent/guardian explaining the absence to the designated attendance office within three (3) school days of their return.
Absences will be excused for:
- Illness or injury.
- Death in the family.
- Court appearances.
- School-sponsored activities.
- Participation in an educational program organized and sponsored by a recognized institution of learning, for which prior approval has been obtained (i.e. college visits).
- An emergency deemed legitimate by the principal.
- Suspension from school.
- Student in good standing may also apply for administration-approved leave. (See student eligibility.)
School Authorized Activities:
Students are NOT considered absent if they are participating in an authorized school activity such as:
- a scheduled appointment with counselor
- treatment in health room
- student council related activity
- school sports activities
- fieldtrips, etc.
Make-up Work
Teachers will provide opportunities for make-up work when students have an excused absence. However, the responsibility for making use of this opportunity rests with the student.
- If a student does not request make-up work by the next class period after his/her return;
-OR-
- If a student does not complete the make-up work within the time designated by the teacher; then he/she will receive F's or 0's for any missed assignments.
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES/TRUANCIES/CLASS CUTS
Any absences not deemed excused by the attendance office will be considered a truancy and F's or 0's will be given for any work due, or any work missed, on the day of the truancy.
EXCESSIVE UNEXCUSED ABSENCES
Any student who accumulates 8 unexcused absences may receive counseling from the attendance office and a warning letter of a possible Family Court action.
Any student who accumulates 15 or more unexcused absences is defined as a "habitual truant" and may be referred to a Family Court.
TARDIES
Teachers are strongly encouraged to develop a classroom policy in which tardies affect grades. For example, including a participation grade which is lowered by tardies or giving a short quiz at the beginning of class to encourage promptness are strategies that should be employed. Teachers may also assign detention for tardies.
STUDENT ELIGIBILITY
STUDENT IN GOOD STANDING means a student who:
- Has no outstanding financial obligations
- Is currently passing Citizenship Class.
- Has 95% attendance
Eligibility for Co/Extra-Curricular Activities:
A student must be in "good standing to participate in co-extra curricular activities.
Eligibility For Administration-Approved Leave: i.e., (absences excused by Administration for family trips, etc.)
10 day leave - Student must:
- Have at least a 3.25 GPA
- Submit written parental notification to Administration two (2) weeks prior to leave
- Obtain Administration's approval for leave
- Be a Student In Good Standing
- Have 95% attendance
- Have no school suspensions
5 day leave - Student must:
- Have at least a 2.75 GPA
- Submit written parental notification to Administration two (2) weeks prior to leave
- Obtain Administration's approval for leave
- Be a Student In Good Standing
- Have a 95% attendance
- Have no school suspensions
Eligible for Athletics:
To participate in athletics, a student must:
- Have at least a 2.0 GPA
- Have no F's in required subjects
- Be a student in good standing
