Principal's Message

Aloha and welcome to website of the WaveRiders. We pride ourselves in building Relationships to foster Respect where all are Responsible to each other as we persist towards "Unity and Harmony Through Dynamic Education and Community for Everyone Every Time." We have serving the West Hawaii communities since 1997 and have been open for 20 years.  During that time our students and staff have created the WaveRider legacy of graduating exemplary citizens who are high performing in all venues of life. In academics, athletics, the arts and as people, the country is sprinkled with WaveRiders helping to sustain their communities.  We are a comprehensive high school serving a diverse socio-economic population rich in cultural values.

Our logo was inspired by the "turn of the century", created by a Physics teacher.   WR wave breaking towards the starburst serves as inspiration for our students to ride the leading edge of the Wave breaking towards a future yet to be discovered in the 21st century. Like the ancestors of the host culture who navigated their path to Hawaii, we expect our students to use their knowledge and skills to navigate Hawaii to a better place in the future.  In SY 2016-17, our 20th anniversary, we have refreshed our logo to honor the voyage of the Hokule'a as it sails around our planet using ancient techniques.  The "refresh" also symbolizes the strength and the values of the cultures making up the Pacific Rim.  The tribal designs within the wave represent universal values that all cultures share like working together, courage and traditions.

Kealakehe High School serves about 1300 students living in diverse communities spanning 50 miles in West Hawaii. We work to make education dynamic, relevant, rigorous and fun.  The "dynamic education" has empowered WaveRiders to study at prestigious institutions like Stanford, Yale, Rice, NYU, UW, USC and UH, to name a few.  A number of students have received D-I athletic scholarships and a couple of them have played in the NFL.  As the largest public high school on the Big Island, we work hard to model how communities should be as we live, learn and play together.  Relationship, Respect and Responsibility are the WaveRider "R"s that are the foundation of our school.

I invite and encourage you to take a virtual tour through the website to get a feel of who we are. I extend an open invitation to you to visit our campus and meet us. E Komo Mai, come and join us; let's do education together.

Me Ke Aloha Pumehana,
